Colours affect us in more ways than we know, especially the way we feel if we are surrounded by a particular colour. So, great care should be taken if choosing your room colours. It can make or mar your mood.
In selecting room colours, you must first of all put into consideration the effect you want. That is, ask yourself, how do I want to feel if am in this room? Excited, energised, stimulated, calm or relaxed? This to me is the most important starting point in decorating a room. Your response to this question will determine the colour theme or scheme to use.
Now let’s look at various colours and how they affect the way we feel.
Red: red is a warm and intense colour. In fact, the hottest of all colours. It is full of energy and vibrancy. Studies have shown that the colour red is capable of increasing the rate of heart beat because of its intense nature and therefore not recommended for those with high blood pressure. Red is best used in small doses like for a feature wall instead of the whole room, for accessories like modern decorative pillows, area rugs, vases and flowers. Using red as an accent colour will ensure that you don’t get overwhelmed or overpowered by its intensity.
Green: green is a cool colour. It is the colour of nature. Think of a large expanse of green field, forest or garden. It sure has a calming effect on your nerves. Use several shades of green for a fresh and calming effect. A great way to bring in green into your home is by using live plants that have lush green foliage. Green can also be combined with red or yellow or both for a non-monochromatic scheme.
Blue: blue and green share almost the same attributes. Like green, blue comes from the cool family. The lighter shade of blue has a calming and restful effect on the nerves. To create a very tranquil effect, use waterlike accents like aquarium, water fountain or life plants in tranparent jar of water . It is highly recommended for bedrooms and bathrooms.
Yellow: This is a friendly, uplifting, and exciting colour. Yellow aids to brighten any space as well as create a warm and welcoming feeling. Use yellow to create a feeling of cheerfulness and excitement. Yellow can be used in children’s room, narrow hallways and dark rooms with little or no natural light
Brown: brown is neutral colour. It creates a feeling of cosiness, warmth and also stimulates appetite. Brown works well with other colour due to its neutral nature.
Lilac and lavender: these are the lighter shades of purple. Lilac and lavender are both delicate and romantic colours. They create very restful and serene atmosphere. Can be used for bedrooms, bathrooms, and any other room that needs serenity.
Pink: pink is the softer side of red. It conveys a feeling of tenderness especially pastel pink. For a sophisticated look, throw in accents of black or gray.
Now you know more about your favourite colours. Make your pick and enjoy the effect.
